The maximum award is determined by the geographical location of the applicant and is paid on submission of appropriate receipts; ISCB warns that funded applicants will cover only approximately 50% of the expense of travel plus registration, so applicants must secure additional funding. Specific per-region maxima are published on each year's fellowship page. Eligible expenses: conference registration, registration for the Student Council Symposium or Tutorials, air or land transportation from home region to conference city, hotel accommodation booked within the official ISCB block, and a maximum of $250.00 in meal expenses.
Alternative reports:
Open to any ISCB member in good standing, with priority to members from low or middle income countries as well as students and postdoctoral fellows. Consideration is based on membership, accepted work, and country economic status. Applicant must be a current ISCB member whose membership does not expire before December 31 of the conference year (pending memberships do not qualify and must be paid in full before applying). Applicant must be listed as an author or co-author on the original submission of an accepted Proceedings paper, Abstract, or Poster (excluding accepted Late-Breaking Posters) and must be the presenter. Applicant must attend the conference and must be able to pay all costs up front.
TBD 2027 (2026 pattern: applications are by invitation only, issued after acceptance notification; ISMB 2026 notified funding status no later than June 5, 2026 and required funded applicants to register by June 11, 2026. Comparable prior deadlines: May 20, 2025 for ISMB/ECCB 2025 and May 19, 2023 for ISMB/ECCB 2023 — passed for 2026.)
Alternative reports:
Application is by invitation only. An invitation email containing a unique single-use fellowship application URL is sent automatically to the submitting author after acceptance of a Proceedings paper, Abstract Talk, and/or Poster. The URL must be submitted by the PRESENTING author; if the submitting author is not the presenter it is the submitting author's responsibility to forward the invitation. Each application URL can be used only once and no application is accepted after the deadline. Receipts for registration, transportation and hotel that equal or exceed the awarded amount are required to receive the full award.
Funds are disbursed AFTER the conference — payment via the ISCB payment system (bill.com) by secure electronic funds transfer (wire or ACH) approximately 6-8 weeks after the meeting. Applicants must attend all conference days. Registration is reimbursable at the early registration rate only; pre-conference tutorial fees have historically been excluded (though ISMB 2026 lists Tutorials registration as eligible). Do not register before the funding notification if attendance depends on the fellowship. Any funded applicant failing to register by the stated date forfeits the funds so another applicant can be funded.
Dates: ISMB/ECCB 2027: July 18 – 22, 2027
Location: 2027: Bella Center Copenhagen, Denmark
Research match: Wishart has been an ISCB member since 2001. ISMB is the world's largest bioinformatics and computational biology conference and the natural venue for the database/tool side of his program — HMDB, DrugBank, NP-MRD, MiMeDB, MarkerDB, PathBank, PHASTEST, BASys2, PlasMapper, Heatmapper2 — plus AI/ML for spectra prediction (CFM-ID) and metabolite biotransformation prediction (BioTransformer). Relevant co-located tracks include 3DSIG (structural bioinformatics, matching his protein-NMR/structure work), CompMS (computational mass spectrometry), MLCSB (machine learning), Function SIG and ICBO (ontologies/biocuration). The 2028 edition in Calgary is a short domestic hop from Edmonton.
