Dr. Eric Merzetti

About

Eric has a PhD in developmental biology and genetics, completing his Bachelor’s degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master’s of Science in Genetics and molecular biology from the University of New Brunswick. As the network manager of BioNet since 2019, Eric has sought to build capacity in bioinformatics and computational biology across the prairie provinces. Recognizing that the first step in developing the highly qualified workforce necessary for the future is to understand and address the needs of today’s trainees.

As a scientist splitting time between the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Statistics Genomics and Bioinformatics Core platform at the University of Manitoba, a regional coordinator for the Canadian Bioinformatics Hub, and manager for Genome Alberta, Eric has a pulse on the training needs and gaps across the prairie provinces in bioinformatics and computational biology. With a drive to unify and recognize the existing bioinformatics expertise located in the prairies, retain this expertise within the region, and attract new highly qualified personnel to local research institutions, industry partners, and government agencies, Eric is committed to advance the foundational education present in these regions in these fields.
